Several important studies found that an LTO-5 tape system had significant total cost of ownership (TCO) benefits over a disk system with data deduplication, including lower cost per GB, lower operating expenses and lower energy costs.
The studies evaluated the costs of backup storage that utilized tape and disk as the primary storage medium including several disaster recovery scenarios.
Everyone found that tape had considerable long-term cost advantages when compared to scenarios that relied on a disk-only solution.
Every day a TV station accumulates a large quantity of video assets. The technology to archive them for a long time is a digital tape library. Etere HSM is a tool to move and optimize video contents between different media, the data movement policy is applied to get the best compromise between cost and speed. With HSM, Etere is able to manage all the archives in a single integrated environment, where the videos required are moved to the correct place at the correct time.
With Etere HSM, the media cockpit can show all the information you need on a single screen.
Etere HSM storage technologies and presents them through a platform specific drive share or mount. It are able to support a mix of proprietary and/or industry standard file systems. These archives can be located within a single site or across multiple geographic locations. This solution gives our customers maximum choice of archive storage technologies. Customers can create an archive copy of all critical data on performance storage and a second copy on secure storage. Optionally, a disaster recovery copy can be stored offsite. Etere HSM, as with the whole Etere suite, uses Windows drivers to interface with the hardware, so every library or tape drive compatible with Windows can be used.

In a full Etere environment, Etere HSM acts as a background process, giving the user a powerful and easy to use interface. Etere HSM is part of the Etere MAM/Indexing system with the tape library offering an unbeatable performance. It is also part of the Etere Automation and scheduling system and acts seamlessly in the background. If you have a mixed environment, Etere HSM has the full range of interfaces like MOS, VACP, so it can be used with any commercial product.



ENTERPRISE LEVEL

Etere HSM is a product used at enterprise level, but it is so scalable that it can even be used with the smallest market configuration. Etere HSM gives a single view of a multi-library environment, and is able to manage different libraries located in different places as a single logical entity.

Etere HSM is logically divided into 2 parts - the library robotic arm manager and the data pumps. Your system can allow several data pumps running on different machines to increase the throughput. The Etere solution is scalable in terms of slot, libraries and data pumps to fit all customer needs. Etere HSM, with a proactive cache management, has more intelligent algorithms to allow better performance with less hardware investment. The proactive cache management looks at the future scheduling to fill up the cache with the necessary video.
The proactive cache management sees every low-res preview request from the operators and caches the video ready to fulfill any request. No more excess power capacity - Etere HSM knows when every video is necessary and when to deliver it.

ENTERPRISE DESIGN

Especially designed for broadcasting Etere HSM is a system designed for broadcasting use. It is not a general purpose system adapted to broadcasting needs. Etere HSM uses the Etere SQL database to store the Tape info, so it makes it easier when searching to understand in which tape the requested video can be found. A comprehensible screen shows what is inside every tape, even for the offline tapes. Etere HSM is able to drive multiple copies of the tapes (up to three copies) that can be held in the library or off the shelf for increased security.
