Etere, formerly known as SIS (Societa Italiana Software) was founded in 1980 by the partners Fabio Gattari and Fabio Mazzocchetti. Fabio Gattari was already the proprietor of GBElettronica, a company which provided technical assistance with high and low frequency equipments to local radio stations. Fabio Gattari was also a partner and programmer in EFFE Computers, a company which developed software for the legal profession. By 1987, SIS began to work with the personal computer networks which had just been launched on the market. Thus, the development of SETA began; this was a management system for legal offices which was popular because of its power, simplicity and high level of compatibility with network systems. Its initial product was a software for public notaries.

In 1989, putting to use the knowledge inherited from GBElettronica, SIS became involved in private broadcasting with the Etere software; this was created to resolve the administrative problems of broadcasters and advertising agencies.

It was adopted by over 650 radio and television stations. In view of the widespread use of the program, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications officially adopted the Etere system for the whole of Italy.

In 1990, due to the new Italian Law known as Mammi Law, SIS started to develop a software product to manage transmissions logs. This product was approved by the AER(Associazione Emittenti Radio) and it became popular in the market. In 1991, SIS, with the cooperation of another Italian company, Audiologic, introduced a radio automation system based on computers, where audio files are stored on network file servers. The combination of airsales scheduling system for advertising, music planning, and managing of audio files allowed SIS to manage more than 50% of radio stations in Italy.

In 1992, SIS developed Etere software as a revolutionary product to interconnect all aspects of broadcast operations and to harmonize operations in a global management system. A first step that anticipates MERP solution!

In the second half of 1993, SIS launched the first professional system for the handling of audio signals based on personal computers and it is fully integrated both with administrative software and with network services. Furthermore, SIS was certified by Novell as the software for local networks (the YES program). By then, SIS had built the tapeless system for Italian state television, RAI TV. This was the first system built in Europe for a Television. With this, SIS was established as a worldwide automation provider and the system remained in place until 2004. SIS had started to promote the full caching playout concept, more than 15 years before what is now called tapeless television. In December 1993, more than 40 broadcasters replaced their traditional broadcasting systems with networks of personal computers driven by SIS software. In 1994, because of its flexibility and modular architecture, SIS software was adopted by the biggest national broadcasting companies and by many small and medium-sized businesses, including television companies. The same year saw the birth of RD72, the first digital video recorder using a hard disk with innovative technology developed entirely in Italy.

In January 1995, the first completely automatic TV broadcasting system was installed. It uses SIS TV software combined with the digital technology of the RD72 with tape video recorders. In 1996, Etere Titler was born, it was the first low-cost system for titles and graphs on video that was ideal for small TV stations. From 1994 to 1996, many nation-wide broadcasting networks were on air with Etere, for its flexibility and superior performance.

1997 marks SIS's first windows release and in the same year, SIS's windows traffic management reaches 200 stations. In February 1997, the first RD73, the new technology digital disk video server was shipped. In March 1997, Etere Music Manager with its 32-bit client server superseded all Eureka music scheduling software installations. In April 1997, Etere Player, the first 32 bit digital assistant for live radio automation, was released. By June 1997, Etere was on-air on Rai ASIA satellite station. Anticipating the needs of the future, Etere stopped production of devices and developed a new direction to focus mainly on software products in January 1998. In September 2000, SIS SRL changed its name after its software, Etere SRL. By the end of the year 2000, Etere SRL had made a decision to move its database to the Microsoft SQL2000 ® platform with its increased speed, data safety and interchangeability of platforms.
From 2001 to 2005 , Etere reached important milestones. The company presented documents management and transcoding technologies to convert video files from MPEG-2 to Windows Media Video, censorship and multichannel recorder and control. Etere also developed Etere Traffic for the management of contracts and invoices with the new Etere SQL system. Etere software was also released in both Chinese and Russian languages.

In 2001, Etere participated in international events with great success. In 2008, Etere entered Australian market with TVSN's installation of Etere automation, traffic, media manager, browsing and transcoding.
